Tigers Split Pair In Home Opener

The Texas Southern University softball split a pair against Lamar in its home opener in Memorial Park on Tuesday evening.

The Tigers (5-2) won the first game in walk-off fashion 4-3, but fell 2-1 as Lamar (4-6) came up with its runs early on.

Lamar struck first, plating two runs at the top of the second as two Cardinals singled to get on base. Brooke Davis doubled to left center for two RBIs.

The Cardinals plated one more run in fifth to take a 3-0 lead, but the Tigers responded at the bottom of the sixth with Marisa Perla’s single to right field to score Pamela Richardson.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Zuniga and Garcia singled and Marissa Martinez walked to load the bases. Deana Zuniga scored or a sac fly by Madison Martinez. On the next at bat, Saniah Henderson singled to right field for two RBIs.

The Tigers scored four runs on seven hits and left five on base, while Lamar scored three runs on eight hits and left five on base.

Madalynn Gonzales picked up the win in 2.0 innings as she was tagged for just one hit while striking out six, and only walking one.

The Cardinals scored two runs (first and fourth innings) on five hits and and didn’t commit any errors in game two.

Texas Southern’s lone run came at the bottom of the sixth as Jordan McClain singled to center field and advanced a base on a sac bunt by Richardson. Henderson doubled to left field to score McClain.

Lailah Bell picked up the loss as she pitched 3.0 innings and fanned four batters, while only walking one.

Texas Southern will take on Houston Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m at the HCU Softball Complex.
