Softball Opens Series With 2-1 Win Over Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Destinee Dixon and Marissa Martinez both had RBI as TSU opened its rescheduled softball series against Southern with a 2-1 win on Monday.

It was scoreless until the third as Pamela Richardson logged a bunt single before scoring on Destinee Dixon’s RBI. The TSU defense came up big throughout the game as SU had runners on second in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning but TSU came up with timely pitching and fielding to keep SU at bay.

In the fifth, Richardson led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on Dixson’s sac bunt. Pinch hitter Marissa Martinez upped the score to 2-0 with an RBI single.

Southern opened the sixth with a leadoff double and eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 deficit. They would draw a walk and single with two outs but TSU starter Jazmine Gendorf ended the inning with a groundout. Gendorf would seal the game in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning for the win.

Richardson finished 3-for-4 with two runs followed by two hits from Jordan McClain. Gendorf went the distance as she struck out two while allowing only one run.

The series concludes with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
