Men’s Basketball Picked 1st, Henry Named SWAC Preseason Player Of The Year

For the fourth straight season, the Texas Southern men’s basketball team was picked to finish first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason poll while senior guard PJ Henry was named the 2023-24 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year.

TSU, which is led by sixth-year head coach Johnny Jones, has won the past three SWAC Tournament Championships and enters the 2023-24 season looking to earn an unprecedented fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and its eighth over the past 11 years. Only three teams have made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in SWAC history.  The Tigers garnered 10 first place votes in the annual preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

A 5-10 guard from Houston, Henry is Texas Southern’s top returning scorer and has participated in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments (three at TSU).

During the season, Henry averaged 12.4 points and dished out 59 assists while nailing 53 three-pointers as his presence made a major difference in TSU’s performance. During postseason play, he averaged 18.6 points per game during the Tigers’ SWAC Tournament title run.

The 2023-24 season kicks off Monday, Nov. 6 at New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.
