Lawson Scores In Double Figures In Road Loss To Jackson State

Taniya Lawson led the Texas Southern women’s  basketball team in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as TSU fell, 75-50 to Jackson State on Monday evening at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

The competition was tied at eight a piece, then Texas Southern (3-14 Overall, 2-4 SWAC) used a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 lead with 3:20 remaining in the first. Jackson State (10-6, 5-0) closed out the first quarter with a 5-0 run as TSU led 15-13.

TSU was outscored 23-6 in the second quarter as they were limited to 2-of-9 shooting from the field to JSU’s 9-of-17 shooting from the field.

Jackson State took its largest lead of the third (51-30) with 3:12 remaining after a pair of free-throws by Miyah Crump. The Tigers couldn’t recover down the stretch from the deficit as they fell, 75-50.

The Texas Southern offense was paced by Lawson as she pulled in 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field.

Jackson State was led by Crump, as she tallied a game-high 17 points and four boards.

Texas Southern is back in action at home as they take on Alabama A&M on Saturday at 12 p.m. inside the H&PE Arena. The game will be broadcasted on HBCU Go.
