Belton Tallies Double Double In Home Loss To Southern

The Texas Southern women’s basketball team fell 68-52 to Southern on Monday night inside the H&PE Arena as they concluded the season series against the Jaguars going 0-2.

Texas Southern (5-19 Overall, 4-9 SWAC) was paced offensively by Tatyanna Clayburne who registered 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Jaida Belton registered a double double including 13 points and 10 boards while adding five blocks. Taniyah Lawson tallied 12 points, respectively. 

Southern (11-13, 9-4) was led by Taylor Williams who had a game-high 23 points. Aleighyah Fontenot chipped in 12 points and six boards.

After a four point tie, the Jaguars used a 14-6 run to take a 10 point lead, (18-10) with 3:13 remaining in the first after a tre by Fontenot. The Jaguars closed the quarter leading 20-12.

The Jaguars outscored the Tigers 16-10 in the second as Southern shot 50 percent from the field (6-of-12) to TSU’s 37.5 percent from the field (3-of-8).

The Tigers refused to go away quietly in the third as they won the quarter 12-11, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers trailed the entire game after having a 4-2 lead early on.

Texas Southern will travel to Itta Bena, Miss. to take on Mississippi Valley on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
