Baseball Wraps Up Weekend Series At Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Texas Southern University baseball team quickly earned a 6-0 lead after the top of the third inning but could not hold the lead as the University of Missouri came from behind for a 15-7 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Daalen Adderley and CJ Castillo were both involved in the first two run-scoring plays for Texas Southern (7-6) and as Adderley’s sacrifice fly to right in the first inning brought in Castillo for the game’s first run. Gabriel Vazquez, who had reached safely on a ground-rule double to left field just two pitches prior to Adderley’s sacrifice fly, also scored on the play thanks to an errant throw by the right fielder.

With the first two batters of the third getting out, Castillo and Vazquez both reached safely. Adderley then reached safely on a single to centerfield to drive in Castillo for a 3-0 Texas Southern lead. Two additional pitches would be all the pitches needed in order to double the TSU lead to 6-0 when Alexander Olivo timed a pitch perfectly and pelted it over the fence in left field to score Vazquez and Adderley.

Mizzou (9-2) had another loud and boisterous crowd that knew no deficit as too large or small to overcome and the homestanding Tigers did just that in a big way scoring 11 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings with the big inning being nine in the fourth. Roderick Coffee’s solo homer to left field in the top of the sixth with two outs would briefly cut the Mizzou lead down to 11-7 before two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings put the game out of reach for Texas Southern.

Justin Colon, Ross Lovich and Luke Mann both tallied three hits with Lovich and Colon collecting three RBIs each. Castillo, Vazquez and Adderley recorded two hits each with Vazquez being the lone wolf of the three to earn an extra base hit. Castillo and Vazquez scored two runs each while Olivo and Adderley both driving in more than one run each.
