CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES
•  The 2014 SWAC Basketball Tournament will be held at the Toyota Center from March 11-15. The Southwestern Athletic Conference will host the 2014 Championship for the first time in Houston, Texas

•  The Southwestern Athletic Conference named Jazzmin Parker of Texas Southern as Player of the Week

•  Four student athletes within the conference earned 30 or more points on the season. The list includes: Jazzmin Parker (TXSO) with 47, Tieroo Frost (ALCN) had 41, Jasmine Jefferson (SUBR) locked in 34 and Jeanette Jackson (PVAM) has recorded 32 points

•  Tennessee Lady Vols Connection: Semeka Randall (Alabama A&M)  and Tonya Edwards (Alcorn State) are both former players at the University of Tenneesee. Randall played at UT from (1998 -2001) and Edwards played from (1986-1990) both winning National Championships

• The SWAC has three new head coaches in the league. Semeka Randall (Alabama A&M), Dawn Brown (Prairie View A&M), and Johnetta Hayes-Perry (Texas Southern)

• Southern University opened the season with two consecutive victories. The last time the Lady Jaguars started a season with two or more wins was in 2011 (66-47) over Dillard

•  Texas Southern enters the season as the defending regular season champions.  The Lady Tigers won a league leading 16 games and suffered only two loses last year. TSU opened the 2013-14 season with a 88-80 win over Tulsa on Friday

•  Joanna Miller (Grambling State) returns this year after finishing first in the conference in points last season.  Miller, last year’s SWAC Player of the ear and this season’s pre-season player of the year averaged 16.5 ppg in 2012-13

•  Arkansas-Pine Bluff hopes to build on last season’s run in the SWAC Tournament.  As the seventh seed, UAPB made it to the semi-finals. Cassidy Wright. Christina LaSane, Carlisha Walker and Erin Campbell begin the season as the leading scorers for the Lady Lions, earning double digit points


•  From 2009-2012 Arkansas-Pine Bluff recorded 10 wins during the regular season. Last year, the Lady Lions won 13 games under Nate Kilbert during his first year at UAPB

•  Mississippi Valley State partcipated in the Glass City Tournament hosted by the University of Toledo over the weekend, giving up a 87-53 decision to Villanova

•  Southern, Texas Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff each picked up a win during their season openers. The last time the SWAC opened the regular season with three or more victories was at the start of the 2011-12 season​
