Southern 3, Texas Southern 2

BATON ROUGE, La. – With a total of 66 kills, 61 assists and 59 digs Southern University defeated Texas Southern 3-2 during western division conference play at the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Southern (6-16, 3-3) won the match by set scores of 20-25, 25-18, 25-13, 18-25 and 15-12.​
The Lady Jaguars dropped the first set before winning the second, third and fifth games while TSU (11-9, 5-1) tied the match at two sets apiece.

In the first set TSU took the win due to a five-point lead over SU. In the fifth frame the score tied six times before Southern ended the match on a 3-0 run with a kill by Simone Beasley.

Phalen Clark registered a double-double with 15 kills and 23 assists while tacking on eight digs. Beasley followed with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Deyshia Burden pitched in 15 kills and four digs while Diamond Williams powered the Lady Jaguars registering a double-digit figure with 21 digs.

For TSU, Veronica Azubuike and Kai Fluke finished with double-digit figures hitting 13 kills apiece. Jyra Churchill tacked on 24 assists for the Lady Jaguars and Sarah Wooten carried 18 digs. Erin Spivey led the Lady Tigers with 14 digs.


Mississippi Valley State 3, Alcorn State 0
(28-26, 26-24, 25-11)

Itta Bena, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State University captured a 3-0 victory over Alcorn State in eastern division conference play at the HPER Complex.
MVSU (8-16, 2-3) swept the match with scores of 28-26, 26-24, 25-11.

Athena Abary led the Devilettes with a double-double, 17 assists and 11 digs. Taylor Delaire registered a team-high 10 kills nailing .529 of her total attacks while tacking on seven digs and Alexandria Garland finished with 12 assists.

Steffi Rodriguez led the back line with 13 digs while Andrea Lopez followed with 12 for the Devilettes.
ALC (0-8) was led by Kenya Parker with 10 kills and eight digs.  Sydney Mellom led the Lady Braves defensive effort with 27 assists, three kills and five digs and Vanessa Ortega posted a game-high of 21 digs.


UAB 3, Alabama State 0
(25-16, 25-15, 25-17)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State University was defeated by University of Alabama at Birmingham, 3-0, in non-conference play on Tuesday inside Bartow Arena.

ASU (16-14) dropped the match with set scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-17.

Amber Bennett led the Lady Hornets' offense tallying eight kills while teammate, Tiara Kelley followed with seven.

Ellyn Jones posted 14 assists to lead the court followed by Brooke Beasley with 11. The trio Rachel Smith, Dragana Cvoric and Luiza Griz each registered six digs apiece to help ASU’s defense.
For UAB (18-9), Ally Slaughter managed 11 kills. Amber Treace paced the Blazers with 35 assists to couple five digs and Rachel Fairbanks posted 10 digs.


Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3, Grambling State 1
(25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22)

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - In Southwestern Athletic Conference eastern division play, Arkansas-Pine Bluff University claimed a 3-1 win over Grambling State on Tuesday inside H.O. Clemmons Arena. UAPB (10-19, 2-2) stayed ahead of GSU (3-23, 1-6) winning the first  and last two sets to finish the match with set scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, and 25-22.
The Lady Lions trailed the Lady Tigers 21-19 before taking the first set on a 2-0 run. In the deciding game, GSU tied the match up four times before UAPB ended the set with 25-22.
Ashlie Jones and Ayanna Parker both recorded double-doubles to lead all players in kills with 14 while tacking on 11 digs apiece.  Whitney Harris followed with 12 kills to assist the Lady Lions.
Courtney Brand carried UAPB with 21 digs and three assists. Jordan Foyer posted a match-high of 45 assists and registering five digs.
GSU was led by Asia Drenon and Tiara McIver, Drenon posted 12 kills followed by McIver with 12. Kierra Hogan dished out a team high 22 assists. Chantel McGill topped the Lady Tigers defense with 16 digs.
