SAN ANTONIO – TSU dropped a volleyball doubleheader to Houston Baptist by a pair of 3-0 margins on Saturday.

HBU 3, TSU 0
HBU recorded three straight wins for a 3-0 decision in match one.

Game one saw HBU jump out to an early 16-8 lead but TSU battled back and closed to within 16-12 led by Thalia Cordero Moreno’s two kills. However, HBU would stop the run and closed the set out with a 9-2 surge en route to a 25-14 win.

TSU was awarded a point to open set two but HBU opened with five straight points before TSU would return to the board as they trailed 5-2. HBU would continue its run as they pushed the lead to 17-5 but TSU refused to pack it in as Chenise Cook logged a kill and a service ace followed by Kourtni Collier’s kill to get within 19-9. TSU used a team effort during a 7-2 run which saw them close the gap to 21-16 after Tyra Williams’ kill. The run would come to a tough end as HBU answered with three straight to lead 24-16 before closing the set with a 25-17 win.

TSU took the confidence gained from the set two and carried it over to the third set as it was a back-and-forth affair.
There were five lead changes early as TSU led 7-6 before a 5-0 run by HBU gave them an 11-7 advantage. Kills by Tyra Williams and Kaitlyn Scroggins allowed TSU to get within 11-10 but HBU added two more points to lead 13-10. The Huskies would commit a pair of attack errors followed by Chenise Cook’s kill for a 13-13 tie and both teams kept it close with five ties over the next several plays. Tied at 20-all, HBU scored three straight to lead 23-20 before wrapping the match up with a 5-1 run as they won the match by a 25-21 margin.

Cordero Moreno led TSU with nine kills followed by Scroggins’ 11 digs. Dallas Balanay-Flores added 13 assists followed by 11 from Alaiyah Fields.

HBU closed out the doubleheader with a 3-0 win in the nightcap over TSU.

The contest started out close but the Huskies turned a 9-6 lead into a 15-6 lead before TSU would score twice. HBU countered with two straight but TSU scored four the next five points which closed the gap to 18-12. HBU scored five of the next seven for a 23-14 lead and used that momentum for a 25-17 opening set win.

HBU stormed out to a 9-2 set two lead but TSU answered with three straight to get within 9-5. TSU stayed within four (12-8) after the next several plays but a 10-2 HBU run turned the tide as HBU would wrap up set two with a 25-13 win.

Set three belonged to HBU from the beginning as they led 7-0 and never looked back as they closed out the match with a 25-12 victory.

Cordero Moreno and Cook led TSU offensively with six kills each followed by Dallas Balanay-Flores’ 10 assists. Britney Ong led TSU on the defensive side with six digs.

TSU is back in action Tuesday, Sept. 6 at North Texas for a 6 p.m. start.
