Texas Southern fell behind early but nearly rallied back as they fell 3-1 to Prairie View A&M in volleyball action Monday night inside the H&PE Arena.

TSU was behind early in the first set as PVAMU led 10-3. TSU managed to regroup and cut the deficit to 16-10 on a block from Jada Hall and Radka Brichackova but a TSU service error ended the rally and Prairie View rolled off four straight points for a 19-10 lead. The Lady Panthers eventually would go on to capture set one 25-14. Set two saw Prairie View A&M jump out to an 8-0 lead before TSU reeled off three straight points to close within five. However, that would be the closest TSU would get as PVAMU went on to claim a 25-15 win.

Prairie View A&M set the tone in set three as they led 6-2 but TSU finally arrived to the party as they stormed out to a 9-8 lead thanks in part to Jada Hall’s four kills. PVAMU would answer with a 3-0 run to move ahead 13-9 and pushed its lead eventually to 18-11 as they were aided by a pair of TSU errors. With TSU’s back against the wall, the Lady Tigers responded with a 14-5 surge to claim the match and regain momentum. During the surge, Danielle Lilley led the way with three kills and TSU received strong play from its front line as Indyah Rideaux and Maria Salazar-Gutierrez posted several blocks to fuel the rally in true rivalry fashion.

TSU used the momentum to lead 5-2 in set four but PVAMU rallied with a 7-1 run to lead 9-6. Salazar-Gutierrez logged a pair of kills to will TSU back to the positive side as they outscored PVAMU 6-2 to lead 12-11. The Lady Panthers stole back the momentum with five of the next six points to regain a 16-13 lead but Jada Hall once again came up big late with two kills to knot the score at 18-all. Both teams traded errors for a 19-all tie but TSU committed one too many as PVAMU jumped ahead 20-19. Lilley came up with a big play to tie the contest but PVAMU’s Melanie Arenas scored two of the next three kills to jump ahead 23-20. Lilley fought back with a kill to draw within 23-21 but a TSU service error killed the momentum on the ensuing possession. Lilley came through with a kill to draw within 24-22 but a bad set by TSU ended the set and gave PVAMU the match.

Lilley led TSU with nine kills and seven digs while Hall followed with nine kills, three aces and four assisted blocks. Valencia Grayson finished with 22 digs while Aeris Ramsey had 18 assists.

TSU is back in action at Prairie View A&M next Monday at 6:30 p.m.
