The Texas Southern golf program officially unveiled its state-of-the-art golf simulator room inside the H&PE Arena on Tuesday in front of national leadership from the golf industry.

Texas Southern University was one of 10 HBCUs selected for the HBCU Golf Consortium initiative, a pilot program under the leadership of Make Golf Your Thing focusing on the business of golf, research and agronomy, and career pathways. In 2022, representatives from major golf industry and community-based golf organizations approached the White House Initiative on HBCUs and expressed a desire to develop strategic alignments with HBCUs. Representatives included CEOs and commissioners from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), Professional Golf Association of America (PGA), PGA Tour, and the United States Golf Association (USGA). The dialogue centered on ways the golf industry could engage with HBCUs to the mutual benefit of the institutions, students, and the business of golf.

Leadership from the aforementioned golf associations were in attendance on Tuesday to witness the alignment’s fruition as a ribbon cutting was held for the golf simulator. The simulator, which is housed in one of the former racquetball rooms on the south end of the building, allows the TSU golf teams to simulate course conditions indoors along with providing its student-athletes another avenue to gain valuable repetitions regardless of the weather in addition to providing a place where they can congregate throughout the day.

“This is a huge day for Texas Southern University and our athletic program,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “This gives us an opportunity to provide a first-class facility for our golf program and it allows them to practice when weather conditions are adverse as they can come right in here and work on their craft. It’s a big day for our department.”
