HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Tigers football team officially kicked off preparation for the 2017 campaign on Monday under the lights as the Tigers hit the practice field for an evening practice session at Alexander Durley Stadium.
"This is a great opportunity for Texas Southern University Football," said TSU head coach Michael Haywood. "We're looking forward to the opportunity that lies ahead of us. We've got a lot of young student-athletes that will have the chance to contribute early."

After taking in the sights and sounds from the first day of practice one theme became clearly evident, competition for starting positions will be intense.

"We've shared with all of the student-athletes on our team that every position is open and up for grabs," said Haywood. "My advice to them is simple, go out a grab you one of them."

The TSU football staff started practice with position drills with coaches for each respective position giving their players individual instruction. The team then separated into offensive and defensive units where they went over various schemes and philosophies.

"Our goal for today is to have our guys come out here with a high level of energy," said Haywood. "We want to see guys flying all around the football field making plays."

Texas Southern will practice at 8:30 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday before moving to 3:00 pm practices to close out the week on Thursday and Friday.

All noted practice times are tentative and subject to change.
