HOUSTON – The Tigers of Texas Southern University completed another successful semester in the classroom, as the university's varsity student-athletes compiled a 3.03 cumulative GPA.
The cumulative grade-point average of TSU's student-athletes concludes a successful season both on the playing field and in the classroom, as Texas Southern finished third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup standings.

"These accomplishments are no accident," TSU President Dr. Austin A. Lane said. "Our student athletes understand that representing TSU includes hard work both on the field and in the classroom. This also speaks to the support and dedication that our academic advisors, counselors and other faculty and staff provide to our student athletes. We know they'll be well prepared beyond their days competing as a Tiger."

The importance of academics is emphasized to student-athletes even before they get to the Texas Southern University campus. Academic success is monitored and strived for throughout student-athletes' TSU career.

"Our primary goal in the recruitment process has always been to recruit student-athletes that are serious about getting an education," TSU's Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Kevin Granger said. "These young people make us proud of their efforts in the classroom and their respective field of play. We want to thank the athletic academic enhancement staff for the support and guidance they provide these student-athletes throughout the year."

One particular student-athlete commanded the academic spotlight at semester's end. Divonte Lumpkin (pictured, right, with Dr. Lane), a senior on the men's basketball team, graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.97, and was the salutatorian of TSU's graduating Class of 2019.

"We are extremely excited about the academic success of our student-athletes," Granger said. "Congratulations to TSU men's basketball player Divonte Lumpkin on his accomplishment as the Salutatorian for the spring graduating class of 2019."

The 2018-19 academic year saw more Texas Southern student-athletes named to the SWAC All-Academic team than any previous year.

"The student athletes and coaches are buying into what we're doing academically," Adeanah Pooler, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Enhancement said. "The administration has given the athletics the resources that our student-athletes need to be successful in the classroom."
