History
NORMAL, Ala. – A 17-point performance from Davon Barnes, a double-double from Joirdon Karl Nicholas and a massive rebounding advantage propelled the Texas Southern men’s basketball team to a 70-59 road win at Alabama A&M on Saturday.
Down 7-4 just 2:44 into the game, TSU (6-14, 2-5 SWAC) endured the sprint before embarking upon a marathon of its own by putting up 18-consecutive points to blow the game wide open at 22-7 with 10:48 left in the first half. During the 18-0 run, TSU seemingly could do no wrong as the team was 6-for-10 from the field, a perfect 3-for-3 from long range and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. John Walker III and Zytarious Mortle helped TSU out to its lofty lead with five points each. Alabama A&M (6-13, 2-4 SWAC) battled its way to within eight at 25-17 with 6:00 left before halftime, but the Bulldogs would go chilling cold over a span from the 6:00 mark to 1:40 remaining allowing Texas Southern to jet out to a 31-17 lead.
Another long scoring drought in the second half by AAMU would be all Texas Southern would need in order all but wrap up their second SWAC win of the season.
Omari Peek’s jumper with 11:19 to go in the game brought the Bulldogs to within 41-38, but the Dawgs were impounded and silenced after a scoring drought spanning 5:57 and allowing TSU to once again push its lead back out to double-digits at 55-38. From then on, any push that AA&M would make was faced head-on by an impenetrable force as neither team budged. The Bulldogs would see themselves win the final 5:32 of the game by a 21-15 count, but that six-point advantage barely made a dent into the deficit they faced as the Tigers led by as many as 18 with 3:14 left in the game.
TSU was 24-for-53 from the field for a 45.3 shooting percentage and 3-for-10 from long range while also going 19-for-25 from the line. The Bulldogs were 23-for-59 from the field from a percentage of 39 while also knocking down 5-for-18 from long range and 8-for-15 from the charity stripe. Walker III finished with 12 points and five rebounds while Mortle chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Peek led the way for Alabama A&M as the only player in double-figures with 11 points.

TSU will remain in Alabama to conclude the road trip with a contest on Monday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala., when they take on Alabama State University.
