HOUSTON – After a week full of uncertainty, the Texas Southern baseball team found themselves back in a familiar place – the baseball diamond. The Tigers fought hard in their season opener but dropped a doubleheader to the University of Houston Saturday afternoon at Schroeder Park.

UH 6, TSU 1
UH broke open a one-run game with four runs over the final five innings as they claimed a 6-1 decision in game one.

TSU found themselves in a bases loaded jam early on with no outs in the second but managed to suffer minimal damage. The Cougars would muster only two runs via a sac fly and fielder’s choice. However, the Tigers cut their deficit in half in the top of the third as Reuben Bennevendo scored on an UH throwing error for a 2-1 margin.

Making his TSU debut, starter Kam Fields settled down after the second frame and received solid play from the TSU defense over the next two scoreless innings. However, UH hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to extend its lead to 4-1. TSU opened the sixth with a chance to cut into its deficit as Tyrese Clayborne opened with a leadoff walk. He stole second to move into scoring position but was thrown out on a double play.

TSU’s Caleb DuBois came on in relief during the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings but ran into early trouble in the eighth and was relieved by Brian Williams. UH added a pair of runs in the eighth for the final margin.

Nic Garza accounted for both of TSU’s hits while Fields (0-1) struck out four in five innings of action.

UH 10, TSU 4
TSU jumped out to an early lead but UH rallied back with multiple runs in the late frames for a 10-4 win in the nightcap.

Dean Salazar opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double to drive in Tyrese Clayborne for a 1-0 lead. Nic Garza singled home Salazar for the team’s second run while Ponce also scored for the early 3-0 lead. UH scored a run in the bottom frame to trail 3-1 but TSU regained the run back in the fourth on Avery Chatman’s sac bunt RBI for the 4-1 lead. UH scored a pair of runs in the fifth to trail 4-3 and took the lead for good in the sixth en route to the win.

Bryson Armstrong (0-1) was tagged with the loss in two innings of relief while Salazar finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

The series comes to a close on Sunday at 2 p.m. live on ESPN+.
