A pair of headers by Ashley Arnes and a goal from Hayden McMillan in the second half resulted in a 3-1 win by Texas Southern over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) Sunday.

UAPB dominated the first half with the majority position of the ball and eight shots on target. Natalie Freeman posted the first goal of the match in the 24th minute for the Lions.

“We were not ourselves in the first half and conceded a goal we wouldn’t normally allow,” said TSU head soccer coach Lindsay Vera.

TSU goalie Alexis Espino produced four saves while there were three shots attempts by Kaila Smith and Makayla Lewis with the last being at the end of the first half.

“Alexis Espino had a big night on Friday in goal for us and came out again, today, keeping us within reach the entire first half,” Vera continued.

The Tigers came out blazing in the second half with four shot attempts by McMillan, Ari Mendez, and Mia Ontiveros within the first 10 minutes of the second half. Crisely Pavon’s penalty kick in the 57th minute set up Ashley Arnes for a goal-scoring header assisted by Mia Ontiveros to bring the game to an even 1-1.

A corner kick by Laura Chavez resulted in McMillan’s position over the ball and delivered the second goal in the 67th minute, giving TSU a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers kept their momentum as Arnes delivered her second goal-earning header assisted by Chavez four minutes later extending their lead 3-1.

“The result of the game depended on us responding to the first half and we made it happen,” Vera added.

TSU retained possession of the ball for the remainder of the match with four more attempted shots by Camile Robinson, Sammie Garcia, and Ontiveros, respectively.

The Tigers maintained their lead to conclude the match with a 3-1 win.

“I give the players much credit for coming from behind, in the heat of a Sunday game, against an organized Pine Bluff squad,” said Vera.

TSU concludes their home matches next week as they take on Alcorn State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Mississippi Valley State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday’s match will also be Senior Night as the team will honor its seniors during pregame.
