History

TSU once again used a big inning to separate themselves from Prairie View A&M as they rolled to a 14-8 win and a series victory on Friday at MacGregor Park.

Prairie View A&M struck first with a run in the opening inning followed by a solo homer in the second to lead 2-0 before starter Jordan Martinez recorded three straight strikeouts to end the inning.

It took three innings but TSU would join the party as Rueben Bennevendo and Roderick Coffee both walked which led to Jeremy Gaines’ RBI single to score Bennevendo. Tyrese Clayborne drove in TSU’s second run followed by Jeremy Almaguer’s triple to center which turned into a run after a PVAMU error. PVAMU committed another fielding error and Gabriel Vasquez made them pay with a two-run homer to lead 6-2. CJ Castillo drew a walk and scored on Bennevendo’s RBI which led to a pitching change and Roderick Coffee’s two-run homer for a 9-2 advantage.

PVAMU crossed home two runs in the fourth to draw within 9-4 but TSU did damage with two outs in the bottom frame as CJ Castillo drove in a run followed by a PVAMU error for a 11-4 lead. Jeremy Gaines would hit a sac fly in the fifth for a 12-4 margin but PVAMU crossed home a run to draw within 12-5.

Johnathon Thomas tripled in the sixth followed by Vasquez’s walk. PVAMU committed a wild pitch as Thomas scored along with CJ Castillo’s sac fly as TSU upped the lead to 14-5. PVAMU tried to hang around with three runs in the seventh but TSU settled down from that point as the Jesse Garcia closed the game out with two strikeouts and a foul out.

Clayborne went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored followed by Coffee’s 2-for-3 outing with two runs and two RBI. Gaines, Vasquez and CJ Castillo all had two RBI.

Jordan Martinez struck out 10 in 5.2 innings of action for the win as five pitchers saw action.

The series concludes tomorrow at 2 p.m. as TSU will honor its seniors during postgame.
