BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University freshman Tammy Syron was named the Goalkeeper of the Week by the Southwestern Athletic Conference following her performance during the opening week of league play.

A freshman from Bartlett, Ill. (St. Francis Prep) Syron claimed her first collegiate victory and shutout and remained undefeated in her first two conference matches in helping lead the Lady Tigers to 1-0-1 start to SWAC play.

Syron stopped both shots on goal she faced Southern and intercepted numerous other passing attempts to lead TSU to a 2-0 win at Southern on Friday. At Jackson State, she stopped 10 of the 11 shots on goal she faced, including four shots during the overtime period. For the weekend, Syron recorded a 0.45 goals against average (GAA) and a 92.3% save percentage.

The award was the third weekly award by a TSU soccer player this season. Prior to Syron's honor, teammates Briana Norwood and Paige Hayward earned Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week awards respectively.

Ariela Lewis (Alabama State) and Brittany Terry (Grambling) also earned weekly honors from the conference. (Click here for the conference's full release.)

The Lady Tigers (2-4-2) visit defending SWAC champion Alabama State on Friday as a part of a two-match swing through the state of Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
