History

For the second straight game, it came down to the wire as Alexander Olivo’s three-run homer in the seventh gave TSU an 11-9 regular season finale win over Alcorn State at MacGregor Park.

Prior to the contest, TSU honored its senior class as Ron Brown, Roderick Coffee and Gabe Vasquez were recognized. In addition, starting pitcher Abraham De Leon was honored as TSU’s single season leader in strikeouts (106).

ASU claimed a 1-0 lead after the first and added another in the second for a 2-0 margin. Jaden Jones’ bases loaded walk in the second scored TSU’s first run followed by Gabe Vasquez’s sac fly to score Shannon Martin.

TSU jumped ahead in the third 5-2 as Michael Goudeau drew a bases loaded walk along with Jones’ two-RBI single to score Brown and Martin. However, the lead was brief as ASU hit a two-RBI single followed by a grand slam to jump ahead 8-5.

ASU changed pitchers in the fifth and TSU took advantage as Brown and Martin led the inning off with a walk followed by Goudeau’s single to load the bases. Jones’ sac fly cut the gap to 8-6 while Olivo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to narrow the margin to 8-7.

The bottom of the seventh started off with a flyout and a throw out from right field to third on Jones’ double. With the options dwindling. TSU dug deep as Vasquez and Adderley drew walks which set up Olivo’s three-run shot over the right field fence for a 10-7 lead.

Goudeau added a sac fly for a score in the eighth (11-8) but ASU refused to go away quietly as they walked and hit an RBI triple for an 11-9 margin. However, reliever Jurgen Zwitzer struck two batters out and forced a groundout to record the save.

Goudeau and Jones finished 2-for-3 as Goudeau had two RBI while Jones added four. Olivo also had four RBI and scored twice on one hit.

TSU struck out 13 on the day as James Malone struck out five in a relief outing while Zwitzer had the save.

TSU opens SWAC Tournament play as the West’s #2 seed and will play Florida A&M at 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Atlanta, Ga. at Georgia Tech.
