BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University soccer players Briana Norwood and Tammy Syron took two of the Southwestern Athletic Conference's weekly awards in helping to lead the Lady Tigers to two wins in Alabama this past weekend.

Syron won her second consecutive Goalkeeper of the Week honor, while Norwood was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

A freshman from Bartlett, Ill., Syron continued the stellar start to her TSU career with two shutout wins this weekend. She stopped all 10 shots she faced this weekend as the Lady Tigers defeated defending SWAC champion Alabama State, and Alabama A&M by consecutive 1-0 scorelines.

Syron is 3-0-1 in SWAC play with three shutout wins and a 1-1 tie at Jackson State to her credit. She has saved 83 percent of the shots on goal she has faced this season. Syron has compiled a 0.94 goals-against average in 11 overall matches this season.

The freshman goalkeeper also got some help from Norwood and the rest of the TSU defense, who allowed only 10 shots on goal during the trip to Alabama. Norwood played all 180 minutes this weekend and anchored a TSU defense that allowed TSU opponents only 10 shots on goal in two matches.

The TSU defense has allowed only one goal in four conference matches for a total of 380 minutes played. Norwood, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, has also helped on set pieces this season, as she is the team's strongest throw-in specialist.

Rebecca Holmes of Arkansas–Pine Bluff was named the SWAC's Offensive Player of the Week.

The first-place Lady Tigers will put their undefeated SWAC record on the line Friday when they host second-place Grambling State to TSU's Durley Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
