MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University held Alabama State scoreless for nearly eight minutes during the second and third quarters Monday as they cruised to a 71-39 win over the Lady Hornets.

At ASU's Dunn-Oliver AcaDome, TSU's Joyce Kennerson scored a game-high 26 points while teammate Kaitlyn Palmer chipped in 23 points to lead the Lady Tigers (12-8) to their sixth consecutive win. TSU improved closed out the first round of Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a 7-2 record.

Victoria Harvey and Shamyiah Smith scored six points apiece for Alabama State (5-15, 3-6 SWAC).

Kennerson's 26 points and three assists moved her past a former teammate on two of Texas Southern's all-time statistical lists. Her 7-of-15 shooting (along with making 10 of 12 free throws) pushed her career points total to 1,375, passing Brianna Sidney (1,369, 2013-2016) for fourth all-time in TSU history.

The three assists by Kennerson gave her 216 for her career, eclipsing Sidney's 215 for ninth on TSU's all-time list.

After Harvey converted a layup with 6:08 remaining in the first half to cut TSU's lead to 21-15, the Lady Tigers outscored their hosts 12-0 for the duration of the second quarter to take a 33-15 lead into halftime. TSU held the Lady Hornets scoreless for another minute and 23 seconds into the third period.

The three points allowed in the second quarter were the fewest allowed in a single period by the Lady Tigers, who give up the fewest points per game in the SWAC. In the meantime, the Lady Tigers built a comfortable lead, and only allowed Alabama State within 20 points for the duration of the game.

Taylor Robinson chipped in eight points for the Lady Tigers, while Camille Mills scored three points and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds. Mills also tallied a career-high five steals in the game.

Kennerson's 26 points pushed her season average to 25.3 points per game, which is a half-point per game ahead of Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell.

Monday's 32-point victory over Alabama State was TSU's biggest win over the Lady Hornets since a 74-40 win in Houston on Jan. 28, 2013. The win was also the largest margin of victory the Lady Tigers have ever recorded over Alabama State in Montgomery since the start of the NCAA women's basketball era in 1981.

The Lady Tigers return to action Saturday when they open the second round of SWAC play at Prairie View A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
