TSUSports.com: Lady Tigers power past Prairie View A&M in four sets

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University overcame a loss in set one to defeat Prairie View A&M in four sets Thursday.

Scores of the match were 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-15.

Alexis Austin knocked down a match-high 13 kills, while Cassidy Jannson and Nicole Robinson added 11 kills apiece to lead the Lady Tigers (7-8, 5-3 SWAC) to their second consecutive victory.

Junior setter Asia Howard tallied a double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs for the Lady Tigers. Senior libero led the TSU defensive effort with 18 digs.

In front of an announced attendance of 898 at PVAMU's William J. Nicks Arena, the Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead in set one before the host Lady Panthers seized momentum with a 5-1 run that gave the home team a 16-13 lead.

TSU never regained the lead in set one despite tying the score at 23. Set one was also the only set Thursday in which the Lady Tigers were outhit by Prairie View A&M (3-9, 3-5 SWAC).

The Lady Tigers jumped out to early leads in sets two and three and never trailed to reclaim control of the match. TSU hit .500 (17 kills and two errors on 30 attempts) in set two as they took an early 13-6 lead and never looked back.

With Alyssa Chuidian starting at the setter position in set three, TSU jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 10-3 and never trailed en route to taking a 2-1 match lead. Chuidian had 14 assists for TSU in the match.

After exchanging points in the early part of set four, the Lady Tigers seized control with a 5-0 run that was capped with back-to-back blocks from Eboni Mitchell and Kirbi Anderson. The five unanswered points gave TSU a 14-7 lead and part of an 11-2 Lady Tigers run.

Anderson had six kills and tallied a match-high seven total blocks for Texas Southern. TSU's Nia Stone hit a match-high .533, putting away nine kills and committing only one error on 15 attempts.

Prairie View A&M's Latrice Brown led the Lady Panthers with 10 kills.

The Lady Tigers return home for their next match, when they host Arkansas–Pine Bluff on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
