HOUSTON – Texas Southern University's Lady Tigers jumped out to a commanding lead Monday night and then held off a late charge from Jackson State to claim a 62-52 win.

TSU freshman Chynna Ewing scored a career-high 15 points and recorded eight steals and eight rebounds to lead Texas Southern (11-5); the Lady Tigers improved to 5-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play with the win.

Ewing and teammate Kaitlyn Palmer were both 5-of-9 from the floor; Palmer scored 14 points, and made four out of her seven 3-point attempts. Joyce Kennerson and Artavia Ford scored nine points apiece for TSU. Kennerson added five assists to her line.

Kierra Adams posted double-double totals of 16 points and 10 rebounds for Jackson State (7-9, 1-5 SWAC). The visiting Lady Tigers from Jackson State dropped their fifth consecutive game.

Texas Southern scored the first eight points of the game and held Jackson State to 12 percent shooting from the floor (3 of 25) during the first half to seize control of the game. A pair of free throws by Ewing with 1:21 left in the second quarter gave TSU its largest lead of the game at 29-11.

TSU took a 29-15 lead into halftime.

Jackson State fared better in the second half, shooting 34 percent (13 of 38) from the floor as the visiting Tigers would pull to within single digits in the third and fourth quarters. Khadijah Moore's 3-pointer capped a 6-1 run between the 5:10 and 3:07 marks of the fourth quarter and cut TSU's lead to 53-47, but Jackson State would get no closer.

Texas Southern outrebounded Jackson State 44-39. Jackson State entered the game as the best rebounding team in the SWAC, pulling in an average of 46.5 per game. Texas Southern entered the game giving up fewer rebounds to its opposition than any other team in the conference.

Breasia McElrath scored seven points and pulled in seven rebounds. Shamiya Brooks came off the TSU bench and scored four points and pulled in six rebounds.

Texas Southern returns to action Saturday when they visit Arkansas–Pine Bluff. Tipoff with the Golden Lions is set for 5 p.m.
