JACKSON, Miss. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University lost their second consecutive game Monday as they fell 73-64 at Jackson State.

TSU's Niya Mitchell posted her seventh double-double in the last 11 games, scoring 22 points and pulling in 11 rebounds, but it was not enough to send the Lady Tigers (10-13, 6-6 SWAC) back to Houston with a victory.

Richelle Velez scored 16 points for Texas Southern, while Olivia Cunningham chipped in nine points and handed out seven assists for the visiting Lady Tigers.

Marniesha Hamer came off the bench to score 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting for Jackson State (11-13), which improved to 7-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Texas Southern jumped out to an 11-2 lead barely five minutes into the first quarter and seemed in control of the contest for most of the first half. The visiting Lady Tigers would twice hold leads of 10 points in the second quarter.

A jumper in the paint by Mitchell stretched TSU's lead to 29-19, but Jackson State responded with a 10-0 run to pull the host Tigers back into a tie with their visitors. TSU missed three shots and turned the ball over three times during that stretch.

After the teams returned from halftime tied at 36-36, TSU's shooting went cold in the third quarter, as the visiting Tigers shot just 23 percent (3 of 13) from the field while Jackson State pulled away from its visitors. TSU trailed 56-45 after the end of three quarters and would get no closer than six points away from its hosts for the remainder of the contest.

The Lady Tigers return to action Saturday when they open a two-game homestand, starting with a visit from Arkansas–Pine Bluff. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
