The Opening Tip
Stanford (3-1, 0-0 Pac-12) returns to Maples Pavilion on Thursday night, hosting Texas Southern (2-3, 0-0 SWAC) in the opening round of the Progressive Legends Classic. The Cardinal is coming off a 66-57 victory over Denver in its first road game of the year. Stanford is navigating through a busy stretch that includes seven games played during the month of November.

The contest will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, with Ted Robinson (play-by-play) and Jarron Collins (analyst) on the call. Progressive Legends Classic Format
Stanford is participating in the seventh annual Progressive Legends Classic, which gets underway with Stanford, Houston, Pittsburgh and Texas Tech hosting regional round games this week. The eight-team event, which also includes Howard, Lehigh, South Dakota State and Texas Southern, will be aired on the ESPN family of networks and wraps up next week with the championship rounds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Following Thursday’s meeting against Texas Southern, Stanford will face Houston (Mon., Nov. 26) and either Pittsburgh or Texas Tech (Tue., Nov. 27) at the Barclays Center. The Cardinal will then host South Dakota State (Sun., Dec. 1) at Maples Pavilion in a regional round contest.
Barclays Center, Part 2
Stanford will be making a return trip to the Barclays Center next month, squaring off against 2013 NCAA runner-up Michigan to showcase the second annual Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational presented by adidas in a triple-header on Dec. 21. The event also features Long Island facing Temple and Manhattan taking on Buffalo. Michigan matched its best win total (31) in school history during the 2012-13 campaign, advancing to its first national championship game since 1993 in an 82-76 loss to Louisville.
Scouting Texas Southern
Texas Southern (2-3) will be playing is second game in four days after suffering an 80-71 defeat at Texas Tech on Monday ... The Tigers opened with victories over Norfolk State (95-83) and Wiley College (113-96) but have dropped three in a row to Miami, Florida International and Texas Tech ... Texas Southern is averaging 83.2 points per game while shooting 46.6 percent overall ... However, the Tigers are allowing 82.6 points per game and 48.5 percent shooting ... Keep an eye on: Aaric Murray (20.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 20 blocks), Jose Rodriguez (19.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 51.7 percent FG) and Ray Penn (15.2 ppg, 42.4 percent 3FG, 31 assists) ... Texas Southern closed out last year on a 12-game winning streak, capturing the SWAC regular-season championship ... Thursday’s matchup against Stanford is the first between the two schools.
Recent Preseason Tournament History
The Cardinal is participating in its fifth preseason tournament under head coach Johnny Dawkins. Stanford has compiled an 8-7 record in such games, with its best performances coming in the form of runner-up finishes at the 2009 Cancun Challenge and 2011 Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. The Cardinal is searching for its first preseason tournament title since capturing the 2007 Basketball Travelers Classic with a 67-48 victory over UC Santa Barbara at Maples Pavilion.
Takeaways From The Denver Game
Chasson Randle’s game-high 29 points (10-14 FG, 2-2 3FG, 7-9 FT, 3 steals) paced Stanford to a 66-57 victory over Denver ... The Cardinal improved to 4-5 in games tipping off at 12 p.m. or earlier local time under head coach Johnny Dawkins. Sunday’s contest was a 12 p.m. MT (11 a.m. PT) start ... Playing its first road game of the year and fourth contest of a 10-day stretch overall, Stanford trailed 25-24 at halftime but took control midway through the second half ... Anthony Brown scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Cardinal, which shot 44.4 percent overall (52.2 percent over the final 20 minutes) and made 23-34 from the foul line ... Stanford forced 18 turnovers and owned a 32-28 rebounding edge, with Josh Huestis grabbing nine and Dwight Powell hauling down eight ... In a game that featured six ties and nine lead changes, both teams struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first half. Stanford was just 8-22 from the field while Denver was 9-24 ... Marcus Allen made the first of two free throws for his first collegiate point while Schuyler Rimmer grabbed the first three rebounds of his career in six minutes off the bench ... Stanford received only one field goal from its bench, with John Gage connecting on a fadeaway jumper in the first half ... The Cardinal has now made at least one three-pointer in 392 consecutive games, dating back to an 0-6 outing against Purdue in the John Wooden Tradition on Nov. 24, 2001.
Cardinal Cashing In At The Foul Line
Stanford is converting at a 71.3 percent clip (82-115) from the foul line while averaging 20.5 attempts per game. Chasson Randle (26-32, 81.3 percent) is leading the way, but he’s just one of six different players who have already tallied at least 10 free throw attempts. The aggressive backcourt has done a solid job of driving the lane while the frontcourt is battling on the glass and routinely drawing contact. Also effective from the charity stripe: Anthony Brown (19-24, 79.2 percent), Dwight Powell (10-17, 58.8 percent) and Stefan Nastic (11-16, 68.8 percent). Stanford shot free throws at a 74.3 percent clip last year, good for 35th in the nation and the best mark in school history since the 2005-06 squad made 76.3 percent.
