Cory Carter lands on BOXTOROW Preseason All-America Team

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The 2014 college football season is upon us and media members from around the country have voted on the 2013 BOXTOROW Preseason All-America Team.[/font]

Former BOXTOROW Rookie of the Year quarterback Greg McGhee of Howard, North Carolina A&T sophomore running back Tarik Cohen, Tennessee State safety Daniel Fitzpatrick and Norfolk State linebacker Lynden Trail lead the list of the 28-man team.[/font]

Fitzpatrick is one of seven players who were BOXTOROW All-Americans in 2013, which also includes TSU teammates Nick Thrasher and defensive end Anthony Bass, the OVC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Bethune-Cookman offensive lineman Andrew Edourad, South Carolina State defensive end Andrew Carter, return specialist Adrian Wilkins of North Carolina Central and Hampton place kicker Anthony Prevost also made up the 2013 team.[/font]

Tennessee State led the way with five selections, while North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State had three members apiece. McGhee needs just 2,913 yards to break former Bison quarterback Ted White’s mark of total offensive yards in MEAC history. In 2013, McGhee was named MEAC offensive Player of the Year after completing 59 percent of his passes for 2,379 with 16 touchdowns. McGhee also rushed for 896 and three more scores.[/font]

Cohen had a sensational freshman year on his way to being named BOXTOROW Rookie of the Year. Cohen led the MEAC in rushing (1,148) and rushing yards per game (104.4) scoring eight touchdowns and averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Rounding out the backfield is Shaw running back Marquise Grizzle who led the CIAA in rushing (1,276), rushing for 100 yards or more in eight of his 10 games. He also scored 15 touchdowns.[/font]

Joining Edourad on the offensive line is Robert Myers of Tennessee State, Willie Robinson of North Carolina A&T, Michael Sabb of Winston-Salem State, Michael D. Thornton of Tuskegee and Domanic Wilson of South Carolina State.[/font]

Southern’s Willie Quinn and Delaware State’s Milton Williams, III make up the wide receivers. Quinn caught 57 passes for 753 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 13.2 yards per reception. Williams recorded 58 receptions for 888 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 15.3 yards per reception.[/font]

The top two tight ends were Khari Lee of Bowie State and Jordan Payne of Alcorn State. Lee is a two-time All-CIAA selection, while Payne is a threat in the redzone catching nine touchdowns last year. Defensively, Bass had 10 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss in 2013, while Carter led the MEAC with 11 sacks and finished fourth with 15.5 tacklesfor loss. Rounding out the defensive line is Jackson State sophomore Javancy Jones, South Carolina State’s Alex Glover and Bethune-Cookman’s LeBrandon Richardson, who combined registered 19 sacks and 43 tackles for loss last year.[/font]

The linebacker position is talented with three of the best linebackers in the country over the last couple of years making the team. Joining Thrasher is D’Vonte Grant of North Carolina A&T and Lynden Trail of Norfolk State. Grant was the leading tackler (102) for the No. 2 ranked defense in FCS. Trail was a stat machine registering 94 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, five forced fumbles and two blocked kicks.[/font]

Fitzpatrick led the FCS with eight interceptions while also breaking up eight passes. He is joined in the secondary by TSU teammate De’Ante Saunders, Cameron Alston of Howard and Michael Jones of North Carolina Central. That trio combined for 11 interceptions and 24 pass breakups.[/font]

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Wilkins headlines the special teams unit and was phenomenal in 2013 returning five kicks for touchdowns (three kickoffs, two punts).[/font]

Prevost connected on 17-of-19 field goals, an 89 percent connection rate.[/font]

Cory Carter, of Texas Southern is the punter and led the SWAC in punt average (44.3) and had 20 punts of 50 yards or more.[/font]
