College basketball countdown: No. 61 Texas Southern

USA TODAY Sports' Scott Gleeson counts down to the start of the season, breaking down the projected field of 68.

The first word: It was August of last summer when Mike Davis took over a Texas Southern team that was hit hard by the NCAA for breaking rules — recruiting violations among others — and lying about imposing sanctions. The NCAA's punishment, which came close to levying the "death penalty," included a men's hoops postseason ban for the 2012-13 season.

So although the Tigers finished in first place in the SWAC with a 16-2 record, their season ended before tournament play -- while riding a 12-game winning streak. Now, free of the postseason ban, TSU will have much more to play for — with the opportunity to win the SWAC Tournament and potentially garner a No. 14 or No. 15 seed.

Yes we do!

Personally, I've never seen so much positive press about our teams. I like it!

The Tigers have high expectations this year!

I agree ... I've never looked so forward to TSU sports like I am this year all thanks to Tiger Basketball.  I plan to drive to Htown for a few games this year .... also I'm seriously contemplating getting a fellow TSU Buddy (and big bball fan) to fly with me to the HBCU Tip Off Classic in Atlanta if my work schedule permits.

I kid you not, a few people have even stopped me on the street when I was wearing TSU 'nalia to talk about how bad our bball guys were & gonna be again this year.

Tiger Basketball has the national spotlight and the word is spreading fast about Coach Davis and his team. It's definitely a big plus for the TSU community. I'm impressed with the basketball program.

Whispers of West Virginia's Aaric Murray joining the basketball team are on Twitter. Maybe this is what the article was talking about?

Confirmation that he was here in Houston last week:

I believe it, he'll be a good addition to the team ...... talent wise.  I read he's a quality "defensive specialist".

And Houston sits on Charleston, WV especially the blk women so I can definitely see why he's tryna prowl the Tigerwalk lol.

You called it @Nelson ... you're on your A game homie and I'm impressed.

Murray will give us the man power to be even more competitive with non-SWAC teams which we need, we definitely had the SWAC in the bag without him.  And he practically guarantees us our first ticket to the Big Dance since '03.  I just hope everyone stays injury free and out of trouble with all the temptation of the girls, bad boy praise, and abundance of weed in Houston .... it is what it is.

And my only concern is SU as far as the SWAC goes.  I hear they're loaded too and have some serious height this year.  But height doesn't equal talent so we'll see.

I was excited before Murray announced his commitment to Maroon & Grey Basketball but now I'm overly excited.  Basketball season can't come fast enough. Btw, I'm expecting the girls to do well and surprise a few schools this year too ... the new recruits and returning players looks pretty strong and their coach I think is legit.
