Women’s Track Climbs Up The Charts After Solid Weekend At Prairie View Relays, Victor Lopez Classic

The Texas Southern women’s track mile relay team posted the second-fastest time in the SWAC this season while Jalecia Smith finished first in the javelin for the second time this season at the annual Prairie View Relays this past weekend.

The mile relay team of Miriam Darden, Ashlonia John, Rashel Bonds and Shelby Brooks won the event for the second consecutive weekend and moved to No. 2 in the SWAC at this point of the season. T’Nia Sample jumped a personal outdoor best in the long jump and moved up to fifth in the SWAC along with a season-best mark in the triple jump. Also setting season-best marks were Brooks in the 400-meter dash and Chadlyn Gladney in the high jump.

Kayla Jenkins moved to sixth in the SWAC in the 100-meter hurdles after this weekend along with Latevia Adderly in the 400 hurdles.

Smith, the SWAC’s No. 2 javelin thrower, won the javelin for the second time this season as she threw a length of 111-7.

Junior thrower Phylan Perkins participated in the Victor Lopez Classic this weekend at Rice University and posted the second-best hammer throw in the SWAC (151-6). Perkins is currently behind teammate Taylor Watson by two feet as Watson threw 153-5 at the Rice Invitational on March 9.

Texas Southern is back in action on April 9-10 at the Texas A&M Team Invitational in College Station, Texas.
