Women’s Golf To Host Hank Stewart Collegiate Monday, Tuesday In Pearland

PEARLAND, Texas – The Texas Southern University women’s golf team continues its spring season play on Sunday in their home tournament, the Hank Stewart Collegiate.

The Lady Tigers will tee up for the Hank Stewart Collegiate on March 1 and March 2 at the Pearland Golf Club. The practice round will be on Sunday, the opening round on Monday and the final round on Tuesday.

“We prepped decently for this tournament.” Texas Southern University head golf coach, Dr. Gary Grandison said. “I appreciate our team’s work ethic and drive, so I am grateful for the opportunity to work with this group,” Dr. Grandison concluded.

This marks the first team competition of the 2021 season as TSU participated as individuals in the season opener in Mobile, Ala. Rev Alcantra claimed the individual title during their spring season opener at the Mardi Gras Invitational.

The tournament is named after former head coach Hank Stewart, who recently retired as TSU’s men’s and women’s golf coach for the past 23 years. A 1977 graduate of Texas Southern University, Stewart has spent 43 years associated with the program. The third head golf coach in Tiger history, Stewart is the only TSU head golf coach to win championships as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach. Stewart captured three championships as a student-athlete from 1973-75 under TSU Hall of Famer William “Rock” Glosson and won two more as Glosson’s assistant in 1976 and 1978. Named the men’s and women’s head coach in 1997, the TSU golf programs were consistently one of the SWAC’s best programs during his era as he has coached multiple All-SWAC performers during his tenure. In 2007 in Tunica, Miss., he ended Jackson State’s 19-year SWAC Title streak as the TSU men’s program won its first championship in 21 years as they overcame an eight-stroke deficit entering the final round.

Ten years later, the TSU women’s golf team made history as they won its first-ever SWAC Golf Championship in Alexandria, La. while also participating in an NCAA Regional for the first time in program history at the University of New Mexico. Stewart also played a role in the development of pro golfers Georgette Rolle and Kassandra Rivera as both won national golf titles during their time at Texas Southern.
