Women’s Basketball Nearly Shakes Up The Standings But Falls Just Short At Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Texas Southern nearly pulled off an upset over Alabama State but fell short in the fourth quarter during an 83-71 loss Saturday afternoon.

In a potential SWAC Tournament preview, TSU jumped out to an 11-4 first quarter lead but a 7-3 run by the second-place Alabama State narrowed the gap to 13-11 with 2:24 left. The tide turned back in TSU’s favor as Quatera Limbrick scored four of the final six points as TSU closed out the quarter ahead 19-11.

The opening of the second quarter saw ASU open with a 7-0 run to pull within 21-18 but TSU regrouped and pushed its lead back to 25-20 after a Namiko Adams’ jumper. ASU struggled to score on its next few possessions and TSU would take full advantage as they closed out the quarter on an 8-4 run for a 33-24 halftime lead.

TSU started the third quarter off with a score but things went in ASU’s favor slightly after as they went on a 16-4 run to reclaim a 40-37 lead with 5:11 left. TSU struggled to hold on to the ball as they committed six turnovers and only two field goals compared to seven field goals and four steals by ASU.

The Tigers fought back and regained a 41-40 lead after a pair of Jenay Bojorquez free throws and pushed its lead to 43-40 after a pair of Ataiya Bridges free throws. The teams would go back-and-forth from that point as ASU would end the quarter ahead 53-52.

Te’Aire Hambrick opened the final quarter with a huge three-pointer to lead 55-53 but ASU answered with a layup to tie the game. A key TSU turnover gave the ball back to ASU with 8:54 left and the Lady Hornets took advantage and regained a 58-56 lead on a three-pointer. TSU would draw to within one on two occasions after but couldn’t get the lead back as ASU pulled away for the win.

Bridges once again had a monster game with 28 points and three assists while Bojorquez added 11 followed by 10 from Adams. Skye Green added a team-high nine rebounds along with six from Bojorquez and Britnee Gabriel.
