Women’s Basketball Heads To Southern Thursday Night

• Texas Southern begins a two-game road trip to conclude SWAC regular season play versus Southern on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

• Second-year head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke returns to the TSU sidelines for the first time since 2012-13. She spent the 2012-13 season at TSU and led them to the SWAC Regular Season Championship for the first time in school history.

• Guard Ciani Cryor is averaging 18.0 points, 6.7 assists and 3.88 steals. Nationally, she ranks fourth in assists and fourth in steals per game.

• Head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is 34-26 all-time in the month of March and 3-2 at TSU.

• Cooper-Dyke is 8-7 all-time against Southern. She last faced Southern two months ago, Jan. 4, when Texas Southern won 61-56 at TSU.

• Southern was picked first in the SWAC Preseason poll but they’re locked in a battle as they could finish as low as fifth or as high as second if TSU loses two games.  Brittany Rose averages 10.2 points to lead the Lady Jaguars. Taneara Moore leads the team with 4.5 rebounds per game. Raven White is close behind averaging 4.5 rebounds per game.

• TSU Senior forward Niya Mitchell completed the trifecta as she was named the SWAC’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year in addition to earning first team honors. A 5-10 graduate student from Bay City, Texas, Mitchell is averaging a double-double (16.0/11.4) and ranks 10th nationally in rebounding (12th in offensive rebounding). She has fourteen double-doubles this season. Mitchell is tied for 19th, nationally, in steals.

• TSU was picked fifth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason poll after finishing the 2018-19 season in fifth. TSU has a revamped roster with only five letterwiners retuning while they welcome nine newcomers and two redshirts.
