Women’s Basketball Falls At Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University women’s basketball went on a late first half run and never looked back as they won 70-52 Monday night.

Despite an SU administrative foul prior to tip-off which allowed Taniya Lawson to drain one of two free throws to begin the game, TSU would quickly find itself down 5-1 less than three minutes into the game before an 8-0 run would breathe some life into the Tigers.

Donterria Brown got the run started with a step-back jumper with 7:09 to go in the opening stanza. Lawson and Andriana Avent would contribute and-1 plays when they knocked down their respective jumpers and their ensuing free throws to give their team a 9-5 lead with 3:42 left in the first.

Southern (11-13, 8-5 SWAC) responded with an inauspicious 14-1 run covering 6:18 of clock time from both the first and second quarters as the Jaguars went 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. An additional 9-0 run by Southern late in the first half all but wrapped the game up as the wind seemingly had been knocked out of the Tigers while trying to get back into the game.

Micah Gray’s jumper with 56 seconds left in the first half would be the last field goal the Tigers would make for 11:49 of game time as TSU’s 10 points in the third quarter were all from the free throw line before Kamryn Bates converted a jumper with 9:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Lawson and Gray led all scorers with 13 points each with Lawson being the free throw queen of the night converting nine of her 11 attempts. Amani McWain led Southern in scoring with 11 points as three Jaguars scored at least 10 points.
