Women’s Basketball Cruises To Home Win On Senior Day

The Texas Southern University women’s basketball team jumped out to a commanding 18-3 lead at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter en route to a 72-36 win on Senior Day over Mississippi Valley State University on Saturday evening.

To give a visual picture of just how one-sided the result was, TSU’s Micah Gray and Taniya Lawson combined to outscore MVSU 42-36 as Gray recorded 25 and Lawson with 17.

After the initial lead TSU earned, both teams settled in and MVSU closed out the first half 9-6 to trail 24-12 at the break.

At the beginning of the third quarter MVSU’s Zaria Harleaux made two jumpers sandwiched around a Lawson layup for TSU, the Tigers closed out the period 21-9 for a 47-35 advantage.

The fourth quarter was all TSU as any hope of a comeback MVSU had would be erased as TSU outscored MVSU 14-3 over the final 3:26 of the game.

With such a large margin on the scoreboard, you can expect other statistical categories being just as lopsided with the most glaring being rebounds to which TSU collected 57 to MVSU’s 31.

Alisa Knight led both teams in rebounds with 11 to complete just the second double-double of the season for anyone donning a TSU uniform this season after pumping in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, 1-of-3 from long range and 2-for-4 from the charity stripe. Lawson narrowly missed a double-double her own as she added nine rebounds to her 17 points. Kamryn Bates may not have scored, but the scrappy guard produced in other categories with six rebounds and producing game-high totals in assists (five) and steals (three).

Harleaux and Krisen Hunt led the way in points for the Devilettes with eight points each.

Prior to the contest, the players, coaching staff and fans honored the team’s outgoing seniors including (Skye Green, Ariana Taylor and student manager Robert Marble, Jr.) who have left their imprint on the program for years to come.
