Weathers Named Newcomer of the Year, 1st Team All-SWAC

Texas Southern senior guard Michael Weathers was named the 2020-21 SWAC Newcomer of the Year while also earning a spot on the All-SWAC First Team.

A senior from Roeland Park, Kansas, Weathers has lived up to expectations in his first season at TSU as the guard ranks in the top five amongst SWAC leaders in four statistical categories. Weathers currently averages a team-best 16.2 points per game and is shooting 49 percent while also dishing out 3.4 assists with 2.4 steals. He isn’t afraid to get in the paint and cause havoc also he ranks seventh with 1.1 blocked shots per contest.

He’s played in 19 games this season and has scored 15 or more points in 10 of them. Weathers capped off the 2020-21 regular season with a 28-point, eight assist, four-block outing against Southern this past Saturday.

Weathers and the Tigers are back in action for the first round of the 2021 SWAC Tournament Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Alcorn State in Birmingham, Ala.
