MONTGOMERY, Ala. –

The Texas Southern volleyball team finished with a 1-1 mark after the first day of competition at the ISTAP SWAC/MEAC Challenge in Montgomery, Ala.

TSU opened the morning with a 3-0 loss to Florida A&M as they fell 25-16, 25-14 in sets one and two before dropping a competitive 25-23 contest in the third and final set.

Alexis Austin led the way with 12 kills and seven digs in the opener while Breyanna York added 11 assists. Alyssa Chudian followed with nine assists.

Game two came down to the wire as TSU won a five-set thriller over South Carolina State.

SC State jumped ahead 2-0 before TSU regained its footing and closed the gap to 2-1 after a dominating 25-12 outing in set three. They would force a fifth and final set by virtue of a 25-18 win in set four. The final set came down to the end as TSU would prevail 19-17 to pull out the win.

Austin once again led TSU in kills with 11 while York added 20 assists. Valencia Grayson recorded five service aces and 12 digs followed by Radka Brichackova’s five assisted blocks and two solo blocks. Indyah Rideaux also added two blocks and four assisted blocks.

TSU closes out tourney play with an 8 a.m. contest versus Delaware State.
