Volleyball Picks Up Road Win At Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, Miss. – Texas Southern volleyball finally put everything together and came away with a 3-0 win at Mississippi Valley State on Friday in a makeup contest from earlier this season.

Set one was a game of runs as both teams had a pair of 4-0 runs early on followed by a pair of 3-0 runs as TSU led 12-11. TSU began to create separation with six of the next seven points led by Danielle Lilley’s three kills for an 18-12 lead. MVSU closed to 20-17 but TSU put the game away with a 5-0 run for a 25-17 lead.

TSU opened up with a 6-1 lead and extended it to 13-4. Nearly everyone who played got in on the action as it was a team effort as TSU led 16-8. That would be the closest MVSU would get as TSU cruised to a 25-13 win.

Set three saw TSU lead 6-5 early but MVSU managed to hang around and claimed a 9-8 lead. MVSU would eventually push its lead to 13-12 but Janiya Chapman turned up the heat with three kills along with a pair of kills from Thalia Cordero-Moreno as it fueled a 9-0 run for a 21-13 lead. Valley wouldn’t go away quietly as they scored four straight but the run would end with three MVSU errors and a Kaitlyn Scroggins’ ace for a 25-18 win.

Cordero-Moreno and Lilley led TSU with nine kills each while Maria Salazar-Gutierrez had eight kills. Alyssa Chuidian had 14 assists followed by 10 from Ramsey. Valencia Grayson had a team-high 11 digs defensively.

TSU is back in action Sunday against Grambling State at 5 p.m. Due to the condition of the H&PE Arena floor from the winter storm in February, the match has been moved to the TSU Student Rec Center.
