Volleyball Falls In 5-Set Heartbreaker At Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern volleyball once again had a heartbreaker as they dropped a five-set (12-25, 13-25, 25-14, 25-18, 16-18) decision at Southern on Sunday.

Southern jumped out to a pair of large wins in sets one and two by 25-12, 25-13 margins before Texas Southern turned the tables with a 25-14 decision in set three.  In set three, TSU took control early and cut down on its errors as Maria Salazar-Gutierrez and Danielle Lilley combined for six kills.  The momentum continued in set four as Thelma Cordero-Moreno recorded five kills to knot the match at 2-all and force a winner-take all fifth set.

The final set was back-and-forth as it went to sudden death. In near similar fashion to the first outing last month, a pair of unforced errors by TSU aided SU’s late surge as they closed out the match 18-16.

Cordero-Moreno and Lilley led the way offensively with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Salazar-Gutierrez added 10 kills while Alyssa Chuidian recorded 20 assists along with 17 from Aeris Ramsey. Valencia Grayson had 15 digs along with 14 from Cordero-Moreno.

TSU is back at home against Grambling State at 5 p.m. Sunday.
