Tulane Pulls Away Late From TSU In Midweek Baseball Action

NEW ORLEANS – Texas Southern put forth a solid effort but Tulane pulled away with five runs over the final three innings to claim a 12-6 win Tuesday evening.

Tulane jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five but TSU wasn’t ready to concede just yet as Tyrese Clayborne drew a full count walk, stole second and advanced to third on Avery Chatman’s single. Chatman stole second and a Tulane error several batters later scored Clayborne. Jordan Vidato hit a sac fly for TSU’s second run and Justin Cooper hit a 2-RBI double to draw within 7-4. Dean Salazar singled for TSU’s fifth run of the inning.

However, the momentum was short-lived as Tulane scored three runs in the bottom frame. TSU answered with a run in the seventh on Chatman’s sac fly to score Clayborne for a 10-6 deficit but Tulane came back in the bottom half with two runs for the final score.

Oscar Ponce led TSU with a 2-for-5 night with an RBI while Cooper hit two RBI, scored a run along with a hit.

TSU had a chance to work out its pitching staff as eight pitchers saw action as A.J. Winger (0-1) got the start

TSU is back in action this Friday for a three-game series at Grambling State.
