TSU men in third place after first day at SWAC indoor championship meet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University stand in third place after the first day of competition at the Southwestern Athletic Conference indoor track and field championship meet.
 
At the Birmingham Crossplex, the Tigers earned 40 points Thursday, one point behind Prairie View A&M in second place. Alabama State leads the competition with 68 points.
 
A pair of Tigers were among the top three finishers in the 3,000-meter run, as Jorge Martinez finished second and Hillary Maiyo took third place in the event. Martinez (pictured left) ran the event with a time of 8 minutes, 52.73 seconds, while Maiyo (pictured center) finished with a time of 8:55.38.
 
Luis Delreal finished the event in sixth place with a time of 8:59.75.
 
The Tigers got another second-place finish from Chris Allen, who took silver in the shot put event. Allen had a throw of 14.87 meters (48 feet, 9.5 inches). Teammate Colby Williams finished fifth, with his top throw traveling 14.22 meters (46 feet, 8 inches).
 
In the long jump event, TSU’s Taylor Levine finished in fourth place with a jump of seven meters (22 feet, 11.75 inches).
 
The championship meet concludes Friday.
