TSU Golf Teams To Participate In PGA Works Collegiate Championship

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Texas Southern men’s and women’s golf teams return to the links this week as they compete in the 2022 PGA Works Collegiate Championship (PWCC).

“We are competing in a significant postseason event,” Texas Southern University head golf coach, Dr. Gary Grandison said.

The Lady Tigers finished in third place at the National Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship earlier this week. Grad student Rev Alcantara had a 1-over par final round giving her a 155 (82-73) total to finish in third place individually. Freshman Kennedi Lee was two strokes back on 157 (78-79) and placed 5th.

The men’s team is still in high spirits after winning this year’s Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Golf Championship. Freshman William O’Connor finished third individually and earned All-SWAC Medalist First Team Honors with his 1-over 217 (72-69-76). Senior Landon Johnstone received All-SWAC Medalist Second Team Honors with his 10th place finish after posting a 225 (70-77-78).

”We are preparing for two different courses with unique layouts”, Dr. Grandison concluded.

The PWCC will be hosted by the historic Union League of Philadelphia where the Tigers will tee up on two of its courses for the event – Union League Liberty Hill and The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale.

The PWCC, known as the most culturally significant championship in collegiate golf, features Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) from all over the country. There will be Men’s Division I and Division II team divisions, a Women’s Team division, as well as individuals representing their schools and playing for Men’s and Women’s titles.

The PWCC was founded in 1986 by the National Negro Golf Association when HBCUs did not have the same postseason championship opportunities that existed for other institutions. Today, the Championship retains its founding vision to open doors for student-athletes from HBCUs and other athletes from diverse backgrounds.”
