TSU Football Great, Pro Football Hall of Famer Winston Hill Inducted Into Black College Hall of Fame

ATLANTA – The Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF) announced its 12th Class today – the Class of 2021. Six inductees were selected from a list of 25 Finalists who had been determined earlier by the BCFHOF Selection Committee. The Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2021 includes: Coy Bacon (Jackson State University), Greg Coleman (Florida A&M University), Jimmie Giles (Alcorn State University), Winston Hill (Texas Southern University), Roynell Young (Alcorn State University) and Coach Willard Bailey (Virginia Union, Norfolk State University, St. Paul’s College, Virginia-Lynchburg College).


“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, congratulations to the Class of 2021,” said BCFHOF Co-Founder and 2011 Inductee Doug Williams. “It is a significant achievement to be considered one of the best to ever play or coach football at a Historically Black College & University.” Votes were tallied from the 11-member Selection Committee, comprised of prominent journalists, commentators, and historians, as well as former NFL General Managers and executives, and from members of the BCFHOF to determine the Inductees.

Hill, a veteran of 16 years as a player and scout in the National Football League, was regarded as one of the greatest offensive lineman ever to attend Texas Southern University. A football star during the 1959-1962 season, the Gladewater, Texas native earned All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors three of his four seasons. Hill gained national attention as a member of the New York Jets because of his outstanding blocking ability as he protected the great Joe Namath; the team’s heralded quarterback. Hill captained the Jets for 11 years also serving as the NFL player representative for many years. As a Jet, Hill started 197 consecutive games and was selected to play in eight Pro Bowl Games. He will be inducted into the 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame.

An 11th round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens, Hill had the honor of winning a Super Bowl Championship and is a member of the prestigious New York Jets’ Ring of Honor. Texas Southern University had an opportunity to honor Hill and 29 other former TSU football players during a homecoming celebration titled “Tigers in the NFL, A First and Goal Celebration in 2015 as a clip of Hill can be heard above.

The Class of 2021 will be honored at the 2021 Black College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Juneteenth Celebration, Presented by the Atlanta Falcons on June 19, 2021. The Induction Ceremony takes place at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
