TSU baseball team falls to Grambling in SWAC opener

GRAMBLING, La. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University were unsuccessful in their quest for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference victory of 2019 as they fell 12-2 in seven innings Friday at Grambling State.

In the SWAC opener for both teams, Grambling scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take a comfortable lead and cruise to the win.

GSU’s Bryan Delgado struck out seven batters over six innings to claim the victory for the home team. TSU starting pitcher Noe Guerrero took the loss for the visiting Tigers; he allowed four earned runs and scattered six hits over five innings.

Nic Garza put TSU on the scoreboard with an infield single in the fifth inning that scored Ryan Diaz from third base and cut Grambling’s lead to 3-1. Garza had two base hits in Friday’s game.

Levi Dixon added a solo home run – his second home run of the season – in the top of the seventh inning for Texas Southern.

TSU and Grambling will conclude their series Saturday with a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Two games are scheduled for Saturday in anticipation of inclement weather Sunday.
