TSU Academic Enhancement “Tiger Connect” Student-Athlete Career & Networking Event Wrap Up

The Texas Southern University Department of Athletics’ Office of Academic Enhancement held its inaugural “Tiger Connect” Student-Athlete Career & Networking Event on March 23 inside the Sterling Student Life Center.

The event allowed TSU current student-athletes to participate in a panel discussion with African-American professionals in the sports industry along with a mini career fair which included a variety of companies both inside and outside the sports industry. Panelists were Jay Christophe, TSU alumnus, former NFL player and entrepreneur, Dr. Paula Jackson, the Chief Operations Officer and Senior Women Administrator for Athletics at Hampton University, Dr. Lacey Reynolds, Professor and Interim Chairperson in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at TSU, Alexandria Price, the Director of Event Operations for the Houston Astros, Duane Scott and Nate Thompson of the Black Sports Professionals Group.

The panelists discussed their backgrounds, how to break into the industry and also described what it takes to be successful not only in the sports industry but a career in general. The student-athletes also received an opportunity to form networking groups with the professionals in attendance as it allowed them to discuss their goals and develop more insight through general discussion.

A mini career fair was also held following the networking panel which featured a diverse lineup of companies from the real estate, education, accounting, law, culinary and law enforcement (local police, FBI, DEA) sectors. Student-athletes also had the opportunity to receive professional head shots for their resumes’.

Texas Southern is dedicated to ensuring its student-athletes have as many opportunities off their respective playing fields as they have on. Assistant Athletics Director / Academic Enhancement Kimberly Evans and her staff are constantly trying to connect TSU student-athletes with high-ranking professionals who are open to giving them advice and helping them achieve their goals once they graduate.
