Track Teams Wrap Up Indoor Season At SWAC Championship

The Texas Southern track teams wrapped up the 2021 indoor track & field season highlighted by a third-place finish from the men’s team.

The Tigers rode the strength of its distance runners to make a run towards the top of the standings as Jose Gonzalez led the way with a second-place finish in the 5,000 and a fourth-place finish in the mile run. Teammate Efrain Lira also helped picked up valuable points as he placed fifth in the mile and fifth in the 5,000. Brandon Washington placed fifth in the 800 while Karon Bain placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles. The mile relay quartet of Erie Prier, Kenneth White, Tyrel Simms and Washington finished fourth in a time of 3:19.81.

TSU’s field participants also had a solid meet as Chardic Williams jumped 6-6 to place third in the high jump. Christian Lewis and Williams finished 2-3 in the triple jump as Lewis jumped 48-4 followed by a 48-3.25 permanence from Williams.

In the throws, Kellen Garion placed fifth in the shot put as he threw 42-1.25.

Across the ledger in the women’s events, Shelby Brooks scored points in the 400 while the mile relay team of Miriam Darden, Jada Childers, Ashlonia John, Brooks and Rachel Bonds placed fourth in a time of 3:55.62.

Chadlyn Gladney picked up points in the high jump along while the throwing tandem of Phylan Perkins and Taylor Watson scored in the weight throw.

The men’s team is scheduled to open outdoor season on March 13 at the Cowboy Relays at McNeese State. The women’s team is scheduled to open outdoor season on March 6 at the JET Relays in Fort Worth, Texas.
