Tigers Sweep Series Behind Strong Effort On The Basepaths

TSU stole 11 bases as they swept the series after a 10-4 win over Alcorn State on Sunday.

ASU hit a solo homer to lead the game off but TSU quickly responded in the bottom frame as Jeremy Almaguer drove in Jeremy Gaines followed by CJ Castillo’s RBI double which scored Johnathon Thomas. Castillo would steal third and scored on an ASU error for the final run of the inning.

Designated hitter Tyler Williams led the second off with a double and scored on Tyrese Clayborne’s single. Almaguer would hit his second RBI to score Clayborne followed by Castillo’s RBI double which scored Almaguer. Thomas would score the seventh run on an ASU error followed by Gabriel Vasquez’s sac fly for an 8-1 lead.

ASU added a run in the third for an 8-2 margin as the game would slow to a crawl with no runs until the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Almaguer drove in Clayborne along with an odd sequence which saw Almaguer elude several fielders to steal home for the game’s final run.

Almaguer led TSU with a 3-for-5 performance which included two RBIs and two runs. Gaines, Clayborne, Castillo and Thomas all had two hits as Clayborne, Castillo and Thomas scored twice.

Five pitchers saw action for TSU and combined to strike out nine as Brian Williams struck out five over four innings for the win.

TSU is back in action on Tuesday at Texas for a 6:30 p.m. start.
