Tigers Split Road Trip

SAN ANTONIO – A game-deciding goal in the second half spoiled Texas Southern’s efforts for a two-game winning streak as they fell 1-0 at St. Mary’s on Sunday in its non-conference finale.

The Tigers showed great effort on the offensive side with a total of eight shot attempts and five shots on target during the match. Senior Laura Chavez had an early shot within the first five minutes of the match while Mia Ontiveros fired an attempt at the 10-minute mark. The end of the first half saw two more shot attempts from senior Ari Mendez and sophomore Sammie Garcia.

The defensive side displayed an equal effort with graduate student Alexis Espino having six saves throughout the match with three saves per half.

Rattler midfielder Jackie Miller delivered the only goal of the match in the 47th minute of the second half. The Tigers continued to fight as Ashley Arnes and Kaila Smith each had shot attempts within a minute of each other. Carissa Reese delivered TSU’s final shot attempt of the match in the 61st minute. The TSU defense played to the final whistle as they withstood four Rattler shot attempts in the final 17 minutes.

The Tigers are back on the road next week for SWAC play as they take on Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. for a 6 p.m. start.
