Tigers split baseball doubleheader with Huston-Tillotson

HOUSTON – The Tigers of Texas Southern University split a baseball doubleheader Wednesday as they defeated Huston-Tillotson 15-8 in the opener before falling to the Rams 3-2 in the second game.

TSU’s Alex Olguin picked up his first win of the season for the Tigers in the opener after starting and pitching five innings. Olguin struck out two and scattered seven hits while allowing only two earned runs.

Christian Sanchez went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the game, while Jordan Hollins, Ryan Diaz, Victor Cruz, and Tyson Thompson each had two hits for the Tigers.

The Tigers wasted little time seizing control of the opener as they scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Oscar Ponce knocked a bases-loaded double to score three of those runs in the inning.

TSU scored in all but two of the innings in which the Tigers batted. Nic Garza hit a home run – his second of the season – to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning for the Tigers.

In game two, the Rams scored the first three runs of the game over the first three innings and held the Tigers to three hits through seven innings of play. Olajide Oloruntimilehin knocked an RBI single in the eighth, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Victor Cruz in the ninth.

The Tigers return to action Friday when they open a three-game series at in-state rival Prairie View A&M.
