Tigers Put Forth Impressive Defensive Effort To Defeat Alabama A&M

Texas Southern put forth its best defensive effort of the season as Alabama A&M scored 12 first half points in an 85-58 win Saturday night inside the H&PE Arena.

The Tigers never trailed from the opening buzzer but AAMU managed to hang around early as the score was 9-6 nearly four minutes into the contest. The Tigers went into overdrive from that point as they outscored the Bulldogs 31-9 over the remainder of the half for a 40-12 halftime lead. TSU turned up the heat defensively from that point as they held the Bulldogs to 3-of-24 shooting while also forcing nine turnovers.

TSU maintained a comfortable lead majority of the second half despite a better shooting performance by the Bulldogs. The Tigers led by 30 points on several occasions as they cruised to their 11th SWAC win of the season while also winning their 14th straight game over AAMU and 25 of the past 26 match-ups.

Four Tigers scored in double figures led by Justin Hopkins’ double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Tyrik Armstrong chipped in with 14 points while Eden Ewing scored 12 with three blocks. John Jones rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points on the night.

TSU is back in action on Monday night for a nationally televised ESPNU contest against Alabama State at 8 p.m.
