Tigers open three-game homestand Saturday against Alabama State

HOUSTON – The Tigers of Texas Southern University open a three-game homestand Saturday when they welcome Alabama State to H&PE Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women’s game between the two schools).
 
TSU (9-11, 4-3 SWAC) is seeking its second consecutive win after winning 65-62 at Mississippi Valley State on Monday.
 
Alabama State (8-10) enters the game with a record of 6-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Hornets have fared better at home than on the road this season, as they are only 2-8 away from Montgomery. ASU has won all six of its home games this season.

High-scoring games …
The Tigers lead the SWAC in scoring, averaging 77.1 points per game. Defensively, TSU ranks ninth, giving up an average of 80.1 points per contest. Against SWAC competition, the Tigers average a league-high 78.6 points per game, and give up a SWAC-worst 74.4 points per contest.

Jones comfortable at home
Already one of the team’s leading 3-point shooters, John Jones has shot the ball particularly well in home games. He is the team’s top 3-point shooter at H&PE Arena, having made 44.8 percent (13 of 29) of his long range shots at home.

Put the ball in the basket
The Tigers rank third in the SWAC in field-goal percentage, shooting 42.9 percent from the floor. From 3-point range, the Tigers shoot 31.3 percent (153 of 489).

Armstrong stepping up
Tyrik Armstrong’s season-high 15 points at Mississippi Valley State was only his latest outburst during a four-game span that has seen increased minutes and scoring opportunities. Over the last four games, Armstrong has averaged 10 points per contest and shot 50 percent (5 of 10) from 3-point range.
