Tigers Fall 3-1 In Non-Conference Action Sunday Afternoon

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Texas Southern dropped a hard-fought 3-1 match to Henderson State in non-conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon.

In set one, TSU had a pair of four-point leads midway through the set but a 5-1 run by Henderson State tied the match at 16. Danielle Lilley’s kill gave TSU a 17-16 margin but a 4-0 run by Henderson State which was fueled by TSU attack errors gave them a 20-17 lead which they would never relinquish en route to a 25-21 win. Set two saw Henderson State go on a 6-1 run which grew to a 17-11 lead. TSU narrowed the gap to 21-18 but the Reddies closed out the set 25-20.

The Tigers regrouped in set three as they claimed a 25-23 decision and was on the verge of forcing a deciding set in set four as it was tied 23-all. However, Henderson State picked up back-to-back kills as they closed out the match 3-1.

Alexis Austin had 17 kills and eight digs to lead TSU while Lilley finished with 16 kills and five digs. Maria Salazar-Gutierrez also had double-digits kills with 12 while Breyanna York tallied 47 assists and eight kills. Valencia Grayson led all defenders with 16 digs and added five assists.

TSU will head to Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night for its regular season finale. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
